Description

Vacherin Mont D'Or AOC is a wonderfully soft, resin-scented, seasonal cows milk cheese, eagerly looked forward to during the colder months of the year.

Produced in the mountainous Jura region of France, it is made using the exceptionally sweet milk of the Montbeliarde cow, the same milk used through the summer months to make Comte AOC.

The cheese is wrapped in slices of aromatic hand-cut spruce bark known locally as sangles. The finished cheeses are matured on spruce shelves to add another dimension of flavour, then boxed to contain the soft, fragrant, almost liquid interior.

It can be enjoyed either spooned from the box at room temperature, or baked gently in the oven still in its box and served fondue style with crusty bread, crudités and warm new potatoes. This is the perfect sharing cheese and, we think, an absolute must over Christmas.

How much to buy

The individual cheese weighs 500g.

It really depends on the occasion, and, of course, how much you love cheese!

As a general guide, for a cheeseboard serving 6 people, we recommend allowing 40–60g of each cheese per person, with 3–4 different cheeses at around 250g each. This gives you a good variety of flavours and textures, with enough for everyone to enjoy without creating too much leftover cheese.

For parties, weddings, events or larger gatherings, the amount you’ll need can vary depending on how the cheese is being served and what else you’re offering. Our cheesemongers are always happy to help, so please get in touch by phone or email for personalised advice.

Please note: all cheeses are cut by hand; therefore, the weights listed are approximate. We work very hard to cut them as accurately as we can.

Delivery

We send our cheese by Royal Mail Tracked 24, with next-day delivery available across all UK postcodes for £4.99 per parcel. Orders over £60 qualify for free delivery.

We carefully pack every order to help keep your cheese in the best possible condition during transit. Royal Mail are very reliable, and most parcels arrive within 24 hours, but occasional delays can happen.

If you’re ordering cheese for a special occasion, party or event, we recommend having it delivered a couple of days beforehand. This gives you some extra time in case of an unexpected courier delay and allows the cheese to rest and reach its best before serving.

We currently deliver throughout the UK but do not offer international delivery.

How We Pack Your Cheese

Every order is cut and packed by hand, fresh to order by our team of cheesemongers.

Your cheese is wrapped in breathable waxed paper, which allows it to breathe while helping to protect it during transit and in your fridge. It is then placed inside a thermal foil pouch with a frozen gel pack to keep it cool on its journey. The gel pack will naturally defrost during transit; this is completely normal.

Finally, everything is carefully packed into a branded box to keep your order safe and presentable when it arrives.

We’re also conscious of the environmental impact of packaging. Around 95% of our packaging is recyclable or reusable, and we’re continually looking for ways to reduce waste and make our business more sustainable. We believe great cheese should be enjoyed with consideration for the planet, too.

Recipe / pairing suggestion

Suggestion – Antipasto Cured Meat Selection

Bake it in the box and serve fondue style with cured meats, crusty bread, cured meats, cornichons and hot new potatoes. Add a chilled glass of champagne alongside if you want to be truely decadent.

A true seasonal cheese. Traditionally made in the Jura mountains between France and Switzerland, production begins as the cows come down from their summer mountain pastures. The cheese is wrapped in a ring of spruce bark, which helps shape it and gives the rind its distinctive woodland aroma. It’s so soft and creamy when ripe that it’s often enjoyed almost like a fondue — simply spooned straight from the box.

HOW SHOULD I STORE MY CHEESE ONCE IT ARRIVES?

Cheese is best kept in the fridge wrapped in the waxed paper or packaging it arrives in. Avoid plastic wrap, as cheese needs to breathe.
