Baby Baron Bigod

Description

This wonderful 1kg round of Baron Bigod is a great addition to the Christmas table. An exquisite Suffolk-made, bloomy, pasteurised cows milk cheese in the style of a classic Brie de Meaux. A full-flavoured soft cheese with a nutty, mushroomy rind, its smooth, silky golden paste will often ooze out over a fresh, citrussy centre. Expect long-lasting flavours of warm earth, farmyard and mushroom, with occasional notes of citrus and truffle.

It is made with the delicate milky flavours of Montbeliarde cows milk. That milk is protein-rich and ideal for cheesemaking, and in France the same traditional breed produces some of the finest cheeses in the world, Comte and Vacherin Mont d'Or among them.

Baron Bigod is hand-made by Jonny and Dulcie Crickmore, a third generation family farm in Bungay, Suffolk, aiming to set the standard for dairy sustainability. They use only gravity-fed milk to protect the fragile fat globules during production, with no pumps at any stage. The curds are hand-ladled into large round moulds using traditional pelle-a-brie ladles, then hand salted and aged in a humid, cave-like environment.

It is the only traditional Brie de Meaux style cheese produced in the UK, and one of only a handful of its type in the world made by the farmer on the farm.

How much to buy

This is a baby Baron Bigod, a whole 1kg round in its own wooden box, sold as a complete cheese rather than cut to order. Available in this format for Christmas only. For cut weights from the classic large wheel of Baron Bigod please see the listing.

All cheeses are hand cut, therefore the weights listed are approximate. We work very hard to cut them as accurately as we can and happy to offer advice on purchasing the right amount if you are unsure. If you would like a price for larger weights or whole cheeses, please call us.

Delivery

We send our cheese by Royal Mail Tracked 24, with next-day delivery available across all UK postcodes for £4.99 per parcel. Orders over £60 qualify for free delivery.

We carefully pack every order to help keep your cheese in the best possible condition during transit. Royal Mail are very reliable, and most parcels arrive within 24 hours, but occasional delays can happen.

If you’re ordering cheese for a special occasion, party or event, we recommend having it delivered a couple of days beforehand. This gives you some extra time in case of an unexpected courier delay and allows the cheese to rest and reach its best before serving.

We currently deliver throughout the UK but do not offer international delivery.

How We Pack Your Cheese

Every order is cut and packed by hand, fresh to order by our team of cheesemongers.

Your cheese is wrapped in breathable waxed paper, which allows it to breathe while helping to protect it during transit and in your fridge. It is then placed inside a thermal foil pouch with a frozen gel pack to keep it cool on its journey. The gel pack will naturally defrost during transit; this is completely normal.

Finally, everything is carefully packed into a branded box to keep your order safe and presentable when it arrives.

We’re also conscious of the environmental impact of packaging. Around 95% of our packaging is recyclable or reusable, and we’re continually looking for ways to reduce waste and make our business more sustainable. We believe great cheese should be enjoyed with consideration for the planet, too.

Recipe / pairing suggestion

Pairing Suggestion - Smoked Almonds

Serve the whole round at room temperature, pile the center with fresh red fruits, smoked almonds and thyme and scoop away.

I love to oven bake this whole Baron, drizzle with thyme honey and crushed garlic. Invite a load of friends over and enjoy with warm bread and loads of wine!
