Description

Discover the award-winning taste of Yorkshire Blue, a wonderfully creamy British blue cheese handmade by Shepherds Purse in North Yorkshire. With its delicate blue veining, smooth texture and mellow, buttery flavour, it offers all the character of a traditional blue cheese without the overpowering sharpness.

Made using cow’s milk and carefully matured for a minimum of eight weeks, Yorkshire Blue develops a soft, creamy texture and a beautifully balanced flavour. Expect a gentle sweetness, rich buttery notes and a subtle savoury tang, with the blue veining adding depth and complexity without dominating the palate.

Yorkshire Blue is produced by the family-run cheesemakers at Shepherds Purse Cheeses near Thirsk, North Yorkshire. Launched in 1995, it was the company’s first cow’s milk cheese and the first blue cheese to be made in Yorkshire for 30 years. Each cheese is carefully turned by hand during maturation to encourage its distinctive blue veining and even, silky texture.

A proud expression of Yorkshire’s artisan cheese-making heritage, Yorkshire Blue has earned numerous accolades, including being named Best English Cheese at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards in 2018.

Unlike stronger, saltier blue cheeses, Yorkshire Blue is renowned for its gentle, approachable character. Its smooth, creamy paste melts beautifully on the tongue, delivering a rich buttery flavour balanced by a delicate sweetness and mild blue tang. As it matures, the flavour develops greater depth while retaining its signature creaminess.

It is an excellent choice for seasoned blue cheese lovers and those who are just beginning to explore blue cheeses.

How much to buy

As a general guide, we recommend around 100–150g of cheese per person for a cheeseboard served after a meal, or 200–250g per person if cheese is the main event. If you're offering several varieties, around 3–5 different cheeses makes for a lovely selection. Don't forget to add a few crackers, chutney and fresh fruit to complete your board. And remember, these are just guidelines — if you're entertaining a group of cheese lovers, you might want to allow a little extra!

Delivery

We send our cheese by Royal Mail Tracked 24, with next-day delivery available across all UK postcodes for £4.99 per parcel. Orders over £60 qualify for free delivery.

We carefully pack every order to help keep your cheese in the best possible condition during transit. Royal Mail are very reliable, and most parcels arrive within 24 hours, but occasional delays can happen.

If you’re ordering cheese for a special occasion, party or event, we recommend having it delivered a couple of days beforehand. This gives you some extra time in case of an unexpected courier delay and allows the cheese to rest and reach its best before serving.

We currently deliver throughout the UK but do not offer international delivery.

How We Pack Your Cheese

Every order is cut and packed by hand, fresh to order by our team of cheesemongers.

Your cheese is wrapped in breathable waxed paper, which allows it to breathe while helping to protect it during transit and in your fridge. It is then placed inside a thermal foil pouch with a frozen gel pack to keep it cool on its journey. The gel pack will naturally defrost during transit; this is completely normal.

Finally, everything is carefully packed into a branded box to keep your order safe and presentable when it arrives.

We’re also conscious of the environmental impact of packaging. Around 95% of our packaging is recyclable or reusable, and we’re continually looking for ways to reduce waste and make our business more sustainable. We believe great cheese should be enjoyed with consideration for the planet, too.

Suggestion – Smoked Spanish Almonds

This cheese is delciious with nuts, almonds, walnuts and cashews work brilliant. Enjou with a malty ale or crisp Yorkshire cider makes a delicious regional match.

A really well rounded blue and a great crowd-pleaser. I personally enjoy this crumbled over a jacket potato with beef chilli and chives.
