Description

A soft, buttery Italian blue. Dolce means sweet in Italian, and this is the gentler of the two Gorgonzola styles: pale, incredibly soft, spreadable and luxurious, with speckled blue veins running throughout.

The cheese dates back to the twelfth century, taking its name from a small town in Lombardy near Milan. It is traditionally blued and ripened in rooms known as purgatory, where the temperature is held around 22 degrees Celsius and the humidity at a very high 95 per cent.

Gorgonzola Dolce has DOP status. DOP stands for Denominazione di Origine Protetta, which is Italian for Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).

On cheeses such as Gorgonzola DOP, it means the cheese is protected by European geographical-origin rules. To carry the DOP name, it must be made in a defined geographical area and follow specific traditional production requirements.

This fantastic cheese has been named among one of the world's best cheeses. Please note the rind is hard, crumbly and grey, and is not edible.

How much to buy

It really depends on the occasion, and, of course, how much you love cheese!

As a general guide, for a cheeseboard serving 6 people, we recommend allowing 40–60g of each cheese per person, with 3–4 different cheeses at around 250g each. This gives you a good variety of flavours and textures, with enough for everyone to enjoy without creating too much leftover cheese.

For parties, weddings, events or larger gatherings, the amount you’ll need can vary depending on how the cheese is being served and what else you’re offering. Our cheesemongers are always happy to help, so please get in touch by phone or email for personalised advice.

Please note: all cheeses are cut by hand; therefore, the weights listed are approximate. We work very hard to cut them as accurately as we can.

Delivery

We send our cheese by Royal Mail Tracked 24, with next-day delivery available across all UK postcodes for £4.99 per parcel. Orders over £60 qualify for free delivery.

We carefully pack every order to help keep your cheese in the best possible condition during transit. Royal Mail are very reliable, and most parcels arrive within 24 hours, but occasional delays can happen.

If you’re ordering cheese for a special occasion, party or event, we recommend having it delivered a couple of days beforehand. This gives you some extra time in case of an unexpected courier delay and allows the cheese to rest and reach its best before serving.

We currently deliver throughout the UK but do not offer international delivery.

How We Pack Your Cheese

Every order is cut and packed by hand, fresh to order by our team of cheesemongers.

Your cheese is wrapped in breathable waxed paper, which allows it to breathe while helping to protect it during transit and in your fridge. It is then placed inside a thermal foil pouch with a frozen gel pack to keep it cool on its journey. The gel pack will naturally defrost during transit; this is completely normal.

Finally, everything is carefully packed into a branded box to keep your order safe and presentable when it arrives.

We’re also conscious of the environmental impact of packaging. Around 95% of our packaging is recyclable or reusable, and we’re continually looking for ways to reduce waste and make our business more sustainable. We believe great cheese should be enjoyed with consideration for the planet, too.

Recipe / pairing suggestion

Pairing Suggestion - Apricot & Walnut Chutney

A perfect spreadable blue, spread liberally over crusty bread and topped with fresh figs or apricots. Rich and creamy, so keep the accompaniments fresh, sharp and sweet.

I enjoy this cheese crumbled it over warm roast squash or a bowl of creamy risotto with peas and spinach, the cheese melts beautifully into the dish.
