Hailing from the historic Pays d’Auge region of northern France, this traditional washed-rind cheese is a true choice for those who appreciate a cheese with personality.

Often nicknamed “The Colonel”, Livarot is instantly recognisable by the three to five bands wrapped around its sides. Traditionally made from natural plant strips, these bands help the cheese retain its shape during maturation and give it one of the most distinctive appearances in the French cheese world.

Beneath its vibrant orange-red rind lies a golden-yellow paste that becomes soft, smooth and yielding as it matures. While its aroma is famously powerful, the flavour offers a rewarding balance of savoury depth, creamy richness and rustic complexity.

Livarot is a cheese that makes its presence known. Its pungent, lingering aroma gives way to a full-bodied flavour with notes of hay, straw, damp woodland and earthy farmyard character. Subtle smoky and meaty flavours add depth, while a gentle saltiness and creamy, buttery finish bring everything together.

The texture is soft, supple and slightly springy, becoming increasingly yielding as the cheese ripens. The contrast between its robust aroma and rounded, creamy mouthfeel is part of what makes Livarot so appealing to lovers of traditional French cheeses.

If you enjoy washed-rind cheeses with a savoury edge, Livarot is an excellent addition to a cheeseboard, offering a more assertive alternative to milder, creamier varieties.

Livarot is produced in the Pays d’Auge, a historic cheese-making area within Normandy, France, spanning parts of the Calvados, Orne and Eure departments. Its green pastures, mild maritime climate and long-established dairy traditions have helped shape the region’s celebrated cheese-making heritage.

The cheese benefits from the milk of Normande cows, a traditional French dairy breed associated with the Normandy countryside. Livarot received French AOC recognition in 1975 and European AOP status in 1996, protecting its name and ensuring that production follows specific rules relating to its origin, ingredients and traditional methods.

The AOP designation is a mark of authenticity: genuine Livarot must come from its defined production area and adhere to the requirements of the appellation.

How much to buy

The individual cheese weighs approximately 250g.

All cheeses are hand cut, therefore the weights listed are approximate. It is then placed inside a thermal foil pouch with a frozen gel pack to keep it cool on its journey. The gel pack will naturally defrost during transit; this is completely normal.

Finally, everything is carefully packed into a branded box to keep your order safe and presentable when it arrives.

We’re also conscious of the environmental impact of packaging. Around 95% of our packaging is recyclable or reusable, and we’re continually looking for ways to reduce waste and make our business more sustainable. We believe great cheese should be enjoyed with consideration for the planet, too.

Recipe / pairing suggestion

Suggestion – British Antipasti Meat Selection

Cured ham, saucisson, toasted walnuts and cornichons make excellent additions to a more substantial cheeseboard.
